I handed the card from my school’s help-wanted board to the man behind the counter of Mort’s Deli (熟食店) at e Farmers Market in Los Angeles. Even before I opened my mouth, he was shaking his head.

It was September 1957, and my family had just arrived in California. My father only got work two or three day week. Our poor savings were gone, and as the eldest boy of the family, I was the only one able to help.

“Let me work the rest of the week, and if you don’t like the way I do the job, don’t pay me,” I said. The man stared at me, then nodded. At Mort’s, I worked very hard. Near the end of the day he called me up to him. How much did that card at school say this job paid?” he asked. “One dollar an hour,” I whispered. Actually I was willing to take less.

“That’s not enough for someone who works as hard as you,” Mort said. “You start at $ 1.25.” Over the next few weeks I learned a lot about Mort. Our store was closed on Sundays, so every Saturday evening Mort urged me to take home the leftover soup. It was a meal in itself, a treat for my

struggling family.

One Saturday after work, I was about to step in my house when I saw a large man in my father s chair. He was swearing at my father. I quietly walked into the kitchen and listened through the door. The man wanted to take our car. Dad offered to make the three payments that were due, but the man demanded the entire sum — $ 325 — or the car. I slipped out of the door, thinking: Who might have $ 325? Who would even consider lending me so much money?

The only person I could think of was Mort. I ran back to his deli and told him my tale. “So, could you possibly lend my father $ 325?” I finished, realizing how absurd it sounded. Although Mort’s eyes bored (控) holes in my face, he gave me $ 325, saying, “I’ll take back half your wages until it’s repaid.”

That night I was a hero to my family. But the real hero was Mort Rubin, who quietly raised my salary every month afterwards. He made the world a better place. 24. Why does the author talk about his family in Paragraph 2? A. To show his strong desire for a job. conditions.

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) found between 1965 and 2012, all but one of 11 Western nations showed an increase in the amount of time both parents spent with their children. The exception was France. The subject pool included 122,271 parents in Canada, the U. K. , the U. S., Denmark, Norway, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Slovenia between the ages of 18 and 65 with at least one child younger than 13. The 68,532 mothers and 53,739 fathers kept a journal of their daily activities.

While mothers in 1965 might have spent more time at home with children, they only spent 54 minutes on child care activities, according to the study. Mothers in 2012 nearly doubled that, reporting 104 minutes per day. Fathers’ time with children nearly quadrupled (变成四倍) since 1965, when fathers reported spending 16 minutes with children. In 2012, fathers spent an average of 59 minutes caring for children.

Time spent with children includes preparing food, feeding, bathing, changing diapers and clothes, preparing for bedtime, reading, playing, and helping with homework.

Within the 2012 data, researchers found parents with a college education spend much more time with children compared to parents without a college degree. The study’s findings shocked the study co-author Judith Treas, UCPs Professor of Sociology.

“According to economic theory, higher wages should discourage well-educated parents from quitting work to spend extra time with youngsters,” she said in a statement. “Also, they have the money to pay others to care for their children. However, the fact is that they manage to spare as much time as they can for their children.” Treas said the trend might be due to “intensive parenting”, the idea that time spent with children is critical for development. 28. What did the study mainly find?

A. Parents worked outside more to support family. B. More Western parents ignored their children. C. Parents spent more time with their children.

D. French parents were especially devoted to their children. 29. What did the study say about fathers compared with mothers? A. They focused more on work.

B. They preferred work to child care.

D. They changed more than mothers.

C. They spent more time with children.

30. How did Treas find the study’s findings?

A. Pioneering. Reasonable.

B. Surprising. C. Doubtful. D.

31. Which saying can conclude the last paragraph? A. You can have your cake and eat it too. B. Parents are the first teachers of children. C. The mother’s heart is the child’s schoolroom.

D. What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the soul.

3D printing is becoming more and more popular. We are now able to print things such as clothing, artificial limbs (四肢), musical instruments and toy models. People and businesses are able to create the things they need very quickly and easily by using 3D printers.

But can you imagine printing food? Some scientists are trying to reform the dining experience by doing this. They hope that having a 3D printer in the kitchen will become as ordinary as having the microwave or dishwasher. Scientists say that they are easy to use: you simply have to select a recipe and put the raw “food inks” into the printer. You can also modify the instructions to make the food exactly how you want it. This means that it would be very quick and easy to create tasty and nutritious meals.

Using 3D printers to create your meals would also save the environment. There would be less need for traditional growing, transporting and packaging processes as food production would be a lot more efficient. Printing food could also help people who suffer from dysphagia (a swallowing disorder). They could program the printer to print softer versions of their favorite food so that they would not have trouble swallowing it.

However, some people think that a future of 3D-printed food would be a disaster. It could take away many jobs, including those for growing, transporting and packaging food. Imagine a world where there is no need for farming or growing crops and that the same taste and texture could be printed from a raw “food ink”. Likewise, traditional cafes and restaurants might lose business.

What’s more, cooking and eating together with family and friends has long been a traditional and enjoyable activity. It is hard to imagine a world where the pastime of cooking is dead and that meals can be created at the touch of a button.

32. What does the underlined word “modify” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Follow. B. Create. C. Delete. D. Change.

33. What’s the advantage of using 3D printing in kitchen? A. It is as cheap as a microwave. C. It is environmentally friendly.

B. You need no special raw food. D. You no longer need a recipe.

34. What if 3D printers walk into everybody’s life? A. It probably will weaken family bonds. B. It may make cafes and restaurants disappear. C. It may have a bad effect on people’s eating habits. D. It will be easy for people to get soft and liquid food. 35. Which is the proper title for the passage? A. Favorite Food Comes from 3D Printing

B. 3D Food Printing: the Future of Cooking? D. Cooking Skills vs. 3D Printing Technology

Modem life is making us lonelier, and recent research indicates that this may be the next biggest public health issue following obesity and substance abuse. 36 Changes in modem society are considered to be the cause. We live in nuclear family units, often living large distances away from our extended family and friends, and our growing reliance on social technology rather than face-to-face interaction is thought to be making us feel more isolated (孤立的).

37 Relocating to a new area, losing a loved one, and starting a course at university are all key times when people feel lonely. Some people believe this experience of loneliness motivates us to reconnect with others and to seek out new friendships to reduce the “social pain” that we feel. 38 But for some, when reconnection is not easy or not possible and a person is socially isolated, he can remain in this uncomfortable loneliness state for a number of years, which is linked to poor mental health.

There are a number of misunderstandings regarding those who experience loneliness. Certainly all of us feel it from time to time. 39 They may be socially isolated due to decreased mobility and loss of friends and partners. But it is not often acknowledged that loneliness also affects people at all ages, including children, and is particularly common in the teenage years.

Another myth (谬见) is that loneliness is typically associated with being alone, but it also

affects people when they are surrounded by others and well connected socially. 40 A. They think it is useful to us. B. So why are we getting lonelier?

C. Loneliness affects all of us at some point in our lives. D. But how on earth can we get rid of this upsetting “friend”? E. Loneliness almost accompanies us all the time and everywhere.

F. But it is commonly known that loneliness particularly affects the elderly. G. This is because loneliness is about the quality not the quantity of relationships. 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)
