I didn?t know what to do when I had to cross the roads 46 my first couple of days there: I wondered whether I should let the car go first or not? Based on my old experience back in China, I would certainly let the car go. “Who wants to be knocked down by a car?” I thought to 47 .

One day, early in the morning on my way to work, I saw a little girl carrying a small Cambridge schoolbag. I could imagine that she must be proud of her schoolbag. The bag is designed for students, which can hold a lot of things, such as textbooks, pens and pencils, snacks and water! Students just carry it on their shoulders, and it is easy for them. I was really amazed by the wisdom of businessmen.

I remembered I had a green cloth bag, which was very rough, but strong. At that time I was short, so my mom made the bag rope shorter. After eating all the meals prepared by my mother, I said to her, “I will go to school now. Bye!” I ran to school with my classmates. At that time, this schoolbag was so light. When I jumped, it jumped. All things in this bag had a collision (碰撞). They gave out cheerful sounds all the way along. At the time I was so happy.

As I grew older, the schoolbag became heavier and heavier. My green schoolbag could not be used any

longer. The bag was worn down, the mouth was opened, and finally it came to an end. My mother bought me another bag, and it was very big. I liked the Mickey Mouse pattern. The bag had a few pockets and both sides of the bag could carry a bottle. It was convenient! I was happy to go out every day with the new bag. Five or six miles of the trip to school seemed as if it were a few steps away. That year I was 12 years old. Though my first schoolbag wasn?t made in the UK, and it was made by my mother herself, it was still a real Cambridge schoolbag in my mind. 69. ________ caught the writer?s attention on his way to work.

There is a saying in England which goes; ?the rain in Spain(西班牙) falls mainly on the plain?. I can tell you now that it is a 75 . The rain in Spain seems to fall mostly on me. I am spending a year in Galicia and, although it is certainly a beautiful part of the world, I think it rains more than in England.

There are no plains here. It is a coastal area, and clouds and storms directly get pushed in from over the ocean with force. As I write, there is a heavy rain outside. I have three umbrellas. Two big ones and a little one which I keep on me 76 , just in case. Believe me what I tell you is all true.

The problem is that very often, umbrellas offer no help at all. The wind is so strong that even the best umbrella in the world becomes useless. 77 , I often arrive at work with a dry head and shoulders (protected by my umbrella), but with wet feet and legs. The rain falls hard and fast, and there is no escaping it. When people from England think of Spain, they imagine beaches and sunshine. Those things are a world away from my experiences here in Galicia. But I?m not 78 . It is because of all this rain that the countryside here is so green and beautiful. In the town a very nice white wine is made. And there are beautiful beaches here in Galicia, although there probably is 79 on them at the moment.

And most important of all is the people. They are very friendly here. Most people I have spoken to are helpful. So I think that?s worth having a bit of 80 for. Anyway, I love my life here in Galicia.

C. Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words(在短文的空格内填入适当的词,使其内容通顺,每空格限填一词,首字母已给):(14分)

Most people know that intelligence quotient (IQ) is important, but EQ is probably more important in daily life. When facing an exam, EQ helps us to manage our feelings. When getting along with friends or parents, EQ helps us to c 81 well.

EQ is shaped partly by genetics(基因). You can see some babies are quiet, while others are not.

B 82 , EQ is something you can learn for yourself. You can learn what different feelings might mean and how they relate to yourself and others. If we learn in the right way, our EQ can get better as we get older. Children with a high EQ usually have greater success with making friends. Having a high EQ needs a few different skills. Learning about these skills can help us to i 83 our EQ. But what are they? Let?s take a look!

1. Know yourself

Most people feel many different feelings t 84 the day. Some feelings like surprise last just a few seconds. Others, like happiness and sadness, may stay around much l 85 . Being able to recognize these everyday feelings is the most basic of all EQ skills. 2. Manage yourself

We all get angry. We all have disappointments. But we need to control it. It is not always the right time or place to express our feelings. When you are angry with someone, take a deep breath and s 86 count to 10. This way, you can calm down. 3. Encourage yourself

When you fail an exam, you may be disappointed. But there is something more effective you can do—learn to encourage yourself. It gives you the energy and c 87 to move on. It helps you to build a strong heart.

D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题): ( 12分)

Ms. LaRosa is a great teacher. She can answer almost any question that you have about any history topic and if she cannot, she will try her best to help you find the answer. Although she has a hearing aid(助听器), she does not let that prevent her from being a great teacher. She told the class about it on the first day and told us not to let it get in the way of our learning and not to treat her differently.

We all like her class, especially an activity which is called the station. Stations are when our tables of four or five become our groups and we go through four various activities, such as Ancient China, in which we need to put together a sentence and write it using ancient symbols. Each station needs about 40 minutes to complete. Ms. LaRosa has a policy that not many teachers give a second thought to. That is writing in cursive (草书的)letters. She will provide you with various resources so that your cursive handwriting is the best that it can be. Ms. LaRosa always says that she has a reason for everything that she does. Recently we just understood her reason for supporting cursive handwriting. Cursive writing can force you to think in words but not in letters. Also it has been proven that people who write in cursive letters do better on tests.

Ms. LaRosa?s class gets to do various fun and exciting things. She also uses real examples from her own life, such as things that her daughter has done. Ms. LaRosa also has absolute trust in her students. She always leaves her purse on her desk.

Ms. LaRosa is a great person and a great teacher who is always there for you, and I feel like I can tell her anything.

Q: Why does the man look nervous? C. Listen to the passage and tell whether the following statements are true or false (判断下列句子是否符合你听到的内容, 符合的用“T”表示,不符合的用“F”表示): (共6分)

London used to be “foggy” for the same reason that cities like Beijing or Chongqing are “foggy” today. The “fog” was a mixture of smoke and fog. In other words, it was caused by air pollution. In London, some of this pollution comes from factories, but a lot of it came from the coal that people burnt in their houses to keep warm during the winter. By the 1950s, London?s smog problem had become so bad that the government decided to do something to clean up the air. A new law was made, so no one was allowed to burn coal in any British city. Within a few years, the air became much cleaner.

Many Chinese cities nowadays face the same sort of problem with air pollution that London faced forty or fifty years ago. However, this problem is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve. One reason is that more of the pollution comes from big factories, rather than from coal burnt in people?s houses. If these factories were suddenly closed, this would harm the economy and lots of people would lose their jobs. Another reason is that changing from coal to cleaner fuels, like gas, is quite expensive. However, the air in many Chinese cities is already becoming cleaner, as the government and ordinary people pay more and more attention to reducing pollution. As a result, there will be less fog in China than there used to be.

D. Listen to the passage and complete the following sentences (听短文,完成下列内容。

每空格限填一词): (共10分)

I love charity shops and so do lots of other people in Britain. The charity shop sells everything from clothes to furniture, all at very low prices. You can get things you won?t find in the shops any more.

The first charity shop was opened in 1947. Now there are over seven thousand charity shops in the UK. My favorite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find children?s books, all 10 or 20 pence each.

Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a manager who gets paid. Over 90% of the things given to the charity shops are from the public. Every morning you see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they don?t encourage this, rather ask people to bring things in when the shop is open.

Charity shops raise more than £110 million a year, doing medical research, supporting sick and poor children, homeless and disabled people, and so on. What better place to spend your money? You get something special for a very good price and a good moral sense. The money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of money-making companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for your unwanted things.
